Automated aerodynamic performance estimates for flapping flight

چکیده

The aerodynamic performance of freely flying birds is inherently difficult to measure directly without interfering with their natural flight. Many current methods thus combine kinematic parameters derived from high-speed video with theoretical force and power models. However, these methods often require manual tracking of points in each frame of a video to obtain kinematic data. This project utilizes image processing techniques to automatically extract kinematic data (stroke angle and wingbeat timing) from high speed videos of Pacific parrotlets flying from perch to perch. To analyze aerodynamic performance, this data is then combined with actuator disc theory to estimate the induced power during each wingbeat. Keywords—bird flight; image processing; aerodynamic performance; wingbeat; actuator disc

Loading Estimation of Flapping Wings under Aeroelastic Effect Using Finite Element Method

The aim of this paper is to provide an aeroelastic computational tool which determines the induced wing loads during flapping flight. For this purpose, a Finite Element (FE) code based on a four-node plate bending element formulation is developed to simulate the aeroelastic behavior of flapping wings in low incompressible flow. A quasi-steady aerodynamic model is incorporated into the aeroelast...

Low speed maneuvering flight of the rose-breasted cockatoo (Eolophus roseicapillus). II. Inertial and aerodynamic reorientation.

The reconfigurable, flapping wings of birds allow for both inertial and aerodynamic modes of reorientation. We found evidence that both these modes play important roles in the low speed turning flight of the rose-breasted cockatoo Eolophus roseicapillus. Using three-dimensional kinematics recorded from six cockatoos making a 90 degrees turn in a flight corridor, we developed predictions of iner...

Flapping wing flight can save aerodynamic power compared to steady flight.

Flapping flight is more maneuverable than steady flight. It is debated whether this advantage is necessarily accompanied by a trade-off in the flight efficiency. Here we ask if any flapping motion exists that is aerodynamically more efficient than the optimal steady motion. We solve the Navier-Stokes equation governing the fluid dynamics around a 2D flapping wing, and determine the minimal aero...

Experimental Investigation of the Pressure, Force, and Torque Characteristics of a Rigid Flapping Wing

Pressure measurements over flapping wings are less commonly available due to the difficulties associated with instrumenting them. This represents an important limitation of the aerodynamic data available for the development of self-contained flapping wing vehicle autopilots and for researchers working on the aerodynamics of bio-inspired flapping wings. This paper describes the design, construct...

Effect of wing inertia on hovering performance of flexible flapping wings

Insect wings in flight typically deform under the combined aerodynamic force and wing inertia; whichever is dominant depends on the mass ratio defined as m = sh / fc , where sh is the surface density of the wing, f is the density of the air, and c is the characteristic length of the wing. To study the differences that the wing inertia makes in the aerodynamic performance of the deformable wing,...
